CHILPS and ESLGS are mainly researched on livers of rats and pigs. And now they are testing on hearts and lungs of rats and pigs. The company hopes the products will make contribtions to address the organ shortage on the world.
CHILPS
Circling Hibernating in vitro Liver Preservation Solution(CHILPS) is used to flush the organ and then to actively circulate throughout the organ. Rather than subdue metabolism, CHILPS is designed to replicate many functions of blood to support liver vitality and function ex situ. CHILPS delivers oxygen and nutrients to the liver and clears toxic wastes. One primary difference between NYHB products and all other alternatives, lies in CHILPS much more complex formulation that addresses the multiplicity of liver cell types and carefully balances their needs and sensitivities ex vivo.
The predominant liver preservation method today is static, cold storage after infusion with UW Solution (ViaSpan). UW Solution is used to flush the liver after removal and to help sustain a static, cold environment. Metabolically inert substances maintain osmotic concentration; hydroxyethyl starch prevents edema; and several substances scavenge free radicals, steroids and insulin. UW Solution helps slow degeneration and cell death caused by hypothermia and cold ischemia.
Ex Situ Liver Growing System (ESLGS)
The Ex Situ Liver Growth System (ESLGS) is a container designed to support a donor organ during transit. It is analogous to the simple coolers used to transport livers under the current method of cold, static storage. However, ESLGS is neither cold, nor static. It is a sophisticated, portable medical device that provides a controlled and optimized environment for donor organs and a monitor their condition.
ESLGS stabilizes organ temperature at a relatively warm, constant temperature to entirely avoid cold ischemia. It is equipped with a pump to circulate CHILPS throughout the liver at a preset perfusion rate through a network of catheters connected to the liver’s complete, dual blood supply network. Instead of chilling the organ to slow metabolism as is the common practice for UW transport, ESLGS circulates CHILPS to carry oxygen and nourishment to every part of the organ, and continuously flush out waste products. A filter removes metabolic by-products. A number of sensors in the system monitor and record such parameters as dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide, blood urea nitrogen, calcium, sodiumand how liver pH may vary from the ideal 7.4 while the liver is within ESLGS.
Our laboratory analysis has shown this precisely controlled environment can sustain and nourish each of the various liver tissues to assure not only extended preservation, but continued actual growth of liver cells ex vivo. ESLGS and CHILPS support healthy organ function to a degree that enables medical treatment of “marginal” livers with medications and perhaps even mitochondria and stem cells.
